Chilling Ruminations

10/07/20 Leave a Comment

Once again Fall moves in and stares me down, and this time I’m staring back.

Just as the leaves start to turn a golden yellow, my thoughts turn to the golden years of life that for far too many are not golden at all. A neighbor succumbs to the frailties of a bullying disease; a friend’s husband learns that last month’s discomfort is the cancer that will swiftly devour and silence him in the coming days.

Over the years, I have seen people transcend and return to spirit, many with an intent of grace and love as their guide. Me …. just the awareness of what they have endured leaves me in a dark, emotionally disfiguring, and graceless fear.

I wonder whether the spirit too slips into a dormant state at the close of a chilling winter. Or, once stripped from the trunk, does it long for and delight at the return of Spring, with life renewed and anchored to the Earth. Then again, maybe it is the residuals of life’s trials and tribulations that bring us to scream at the top of our lungs upon finding we just left the womb to start all over again.
