Like an old familiar song
faintly recalled from some other time;
notes, disjointed, following each other,
then suddenly trailed only by silence.
How is it again that the song ends?
Such is the long-forgotten music of my heart.
A resonating familiar chord awakens me,
only to then retreat
into the dark recesses of my mind.
Oh, the lengths to which the heart will go
in an attempt to spare itself a repeated ache
borne in love’s final measure.
